An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
If this proverb is true, I cannot say. I do not even know whether this saying is popular in the Anglo-Saxon-speaking world. Many people here in Germany know it well. And eating apples is considered to be extremely healthy here.
However, I eat apples because, I have liked the slightly sour taste since my childhood. Sadly, many old apple varieties can no longer be bought in the shops. I especially liked to eat the varieties ‘Berlepsch’ and ‘Ingried Marie’. The latter, with its white dots and intense red colouring, didn’t only taste very delicious it also looked very appetizing.
Attempts to plant an apple tree in our garden didn’t work out. The soil conditions at that time were simply too poor.
